June 2 & 3 at 8pm, GALA Hispanic Theater presents Silenced Within Me/Callada Conmigo, a dramatic piece created to raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence in the Latino community. Based on interviews of survivors of such violence, community residents will also use music and movement to reveal the stories of the survivors and how the abuse affected their lives and their families. The presentation will also feature singer Maria Isolina. In Spanish with some English

The 23rd annual Imagination Bethesda, a FREE children’s street festival celebrating children and the arts, with musical performances and professional children’s entertainers on stage and hands-on art & craft activities lining the streets along Elm St. & Woodmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda.
Organized and managed by the Bethesda Urban Partnership, the festival will host 20 local businesses and arts organizations that will provide a variety of hands-on art and craft activities to entertain and energize the 12-and-under crowd - including Adventure Theatre MTC, Round House Theatre and Imagination Stage. Additionally, the festival will feature face painters, balloonists, a stilt-walker, free giveaways and more.

Kennedy's 100th birthday, the Kennedy Center opens its doors wider than ever with a free, cross-cultural festival showcasing street arts culture, Hip Hop, and skateboard culture, as well as classical and contemporary arts on Sat, May 27, noon-10pm. GALA Hispanic Theater presents Paso Nuevo, Spring 2017 on May 17 at 8pm. A FREE evening of original works performed in English with some Spanish. "We Are US" includes new work by Paso Nuevo participants; a performance and music by Chris Wonder; and a return visit to the Lobato family by Paso Nuevo alumni. The Lobato family first appeared in the Paso Nuevo presentation of Young and Corrupted in 2011. Through the evening’s work, we will experience the lives of immigrant youth and American Latino youth whose parents were immigrants. The presentation reflects the Latino reality in Washington, D.C, and launches a celebration of 25 years of the Paso Nuevo program.

Shakespeare Theatre Company holds its next FREE ReDiscovery Reading on May 8 (7:30pm) of DEMETRIUS by Friedrich Schiller and Peter Oswald. The reading features STC favorites Nancy Robinette, John Lescault and Corey Allen. An epic tale of self-determination, performed identities, and the complications of well-intended insurgency. Taking on Schiller’s unfinished last play, a dramatization of the same true story later made famous by Pushkin’s Boris Godunov, Peter Oswald’s verse translation and adaptation expands to Shakespearean dimensions, glancing from the reign of Ivan the Terrible to modern-day excursions in Iraq and Afghanstian.

MetroStage will have a Pay-What-You-Can performance of MASTER CLASS, Terrence McNally's play about opera singer Maria Callas teaching a master class to three students, on Thursday, May 4 at 8pm. Rorschach Theatre has Pay-What-You-Can performances of FORGOTTEN KINGDOMS by Randy Baker April 21 – 28. Pay-What-You-Can tickets must be purchased at the door for each performance. Synopsis: On a small island in Indonesia, a wooden house balances on stilts over a churning sea. In this house Reverend David Holiday tries to convert a skeptical young local whose fate has become improbably intertwined with his own. At stake this night is the life of the young man’s father, the future of this island’s ancient culture and the happiness of an American family caught between worlds. As the night turns into morning, the fate of David’s haunted young son becomes the biggest question of all.

Imagination Stage announced that Artistic Director, Janet Stanford, has been awarded the 2017 Harold Oaks Award (Individual) by Theatre for Young Audiences/USA (TYA/USA). The award, presented at the One Theatre World in May, is to acknowledge the significant contributions of individuals and organizations in the Theatre for Young Audiences field in the US. The Harold Oaks Awards ask how nominees have contributed to the artistic development of the field of Theatre for Young Audiences, how they’ve brought national recognition to the field, how they’ve contributed to and interacted with their local community, and how they’ve contributed to a global/diverse understanding of the field of Theatre for Young Audiences. Shakespeare's Birthday Open House is coming up on Sun, Apr 23, 12-4pm, at Folger Shakespeare Library. The day includes stage combat demonstrations, Elizabethan crafts, and birthday cake for all and a special appearance by Queen Elizabeth I herself.
